Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Callow

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Callow is a fairy fort, a circular earthwork now gone, erased from the limestone slope. It stood twenty metres wide in rough pasture, drawn on the 1841 map but levelled before human memory could keep it. The land forgot the shape of its own boundary. What was built became grass again, and the fort vanished into the ordinary field.
In rough pasture, on E-facing slope in area of outcropping limestone. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1841 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
