What is recorded here
Byblox held a thirty-metre earthen ring on a gentle slope beside the Awbeg River, visible only through crop shadows after ploughing erased its ridge. The 1842 map showed trees inside an irregular boundary, while the 1937 map drew a circular bank, suggesting the fort changed shape or memory before disappearing. It may have served as a seasonal stronghold, a boundary marker, or a forgotten household for people whose names never reached the inventory.
In tillage, on gentle E-facing slope, below crest of hill and c. 100m W of Awbeg River. Byblox House, now demolished, once stood c. 400m to SE. Depicted as enclosed irregularly shaped area, planted with trees on 1842 OS 6-inch map; as hachured circular raised area (diam. c. 30m) on 1937 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace of site. Cropmark of bivallate circular enclosure visible in aerial photograph (CASAP).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Byblox is a circular earthwork enclosure, likely dating to the early medieval period, associated with both ancient settlement and later folklore surrounding fairies and otherworldly beings. The site's depiction in 1842 shows it as a wooded, irregularly shaped enclosure, possibly linked to the nearby historic Byblox House.
