Old Court

Entrance gateway, erected c. 1810, at road end of linear avenue to early eighteenth-century and early nineteenth-century houses. Square-profile chamfered ashlar limestone piers with moulded caps and balls, and having double-leaf decorative wrought-iron vehicular gates flanked by similar, lower pedestrian gates and piers. Curvilinear walls extending to public road on west side and to field gate pier on east side. Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge set inside gates, now derelict. Pitched slate roof with projecting eaves and rendered chimneystack, rendered walls, square-headed window openings with moulded render surrounds and paired leaded casement windows, and square-headed central door opening having render Gibbsian surround and pediment.

These finely-executed piers and gates form a grand entrance to Old Court. The finely executed ashlar limestone piers and wrought-iron gates show good craftsmanship. The lodge, though derelict, retains its historic form and much of its fabric such as render details and windows and is an integral part of the demesne. This entrance is a handsome landmark feature on this road.
