Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Burnfort

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human ringforts, misnamed later. This is one of them: a circular earth bank, stone-faced in places, set on a sunny slope beside Leapford stream in Burnfort. People lived here, farmed here, and forgot the names. The fairies inherited the vacancy.
In tillage, on S-facing slope to W of Leapford stream. Circular area (42m E-W; 41.4m N-S) defined by earthen bank (H 1.7m) with faint trace of external fosse to S and W. Bank stone-faced in parts. Interior slopes down to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
