Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Broughal

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mud and memory have built a double ring around Broughal, holding a hollow space wide enough for thirty-six paces of breath. People may have lived, hidden or worshipped inside that temporary chamber before the land forgot their names. The fairies never left; they simply stopped answering questions that do not admit ignorance.
Roughly oval shaped area (diam 36m N-S ) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening and external fosse. Inner bank (Wth 6m at base; int. H 1m; ext. H 2m), external bank (Wth 7m at base; int. H 1.8m; ext. H 2m). Intervening fosse (Wth 1.6m) and external fosse (Wth 2.2m; ext. D 1.4m). Possible entrance gap (Wth 3m) at SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 9/1956).

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
