Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Brierfort

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Brierfort holds two rings, one stated and one whispered. The stated ring is a field mark, shallow and worn. The whispered ring is a fairy fort, excluded from human memory but still shaped like a chamber. That contrast is the place. You are not being asked to believe the fairies or dismiss the field. You are being asked to remember that some chambers stop waiting to be understood.
Some 180m SE of a ringfort (GA001-001----). Very poorly preserved subcircular rath (N-S 30m, E-W 26m) defined by a degraded scarp (H < 0.6m) best preserved at SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
