Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Bohonagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Bohonagh holds a thirty-two-metre earthen ring on a western slope, marked by two deliberate gaps rather than one formal gate. People built that round chamber for daily life, perhaps blocking the west wind or keeping livestock safe while leaving room for carts and people to pass. The fairies belong only to later storytelling, yet they remind us the chamber still feels alive because its shape excludes ordinary forgetfulness.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. Circular, slightly raised area (32.5m N-S; 32.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 3m) with external fosse (D 1.5m) SE->SW. Break in bank to E (Wth 6m) and W (Wth 3.2m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
