Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Bawnmore South

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not places to tease. They belong to the CluaSI, the hidden people, and they answer mockery with misdirection. Lose a child in one and it may return aged, or never return at all. This is no game.
In pasture, on gentle S-facing slope, near top of hill. Faint trace of site as circular depression in field; locally known as site of fort. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 395) as levelled single-ramparted fort (diam. c. 30yd) on Mr Foley's land. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Bawnmore South, likely dating to the early medieval period, is marked by a circular depression on a hilltop, suggesting a single-ramparted structure. Locally associated with fairy folklore, such sites were often believed to be entrances to the Otherworld or inhabited by supernatural beings in Irish tradition.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
