Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Baunnanooneeny

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible entrance gap, yet the dual banks and central depression mark a deliberate residential or ritual enclosure rather than a random mound. Cattle graze above the surviving earthworks today, reducing ancient boundary to subtle ripple in green pasture. The fort resisted complete erasure because its shape served life, not decoration.
In pasture, on gentle SE-facing slope. Roughly circular area (50m E-W; 46m N-S) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening fosse. Inner bank (int. H 1.3m) survives best W->NE. Outer bank (H 1m) incorporated into field fence system WSW->NE; low (H 0.75m) and narrow elsewhere. Faint trace of external fosse to W; intervening fosse deepest on upslope (W->NE). Entrance to SW. Interior slopes gently down to S; shallow depression inside inner bank. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
