No one knows which bones filled the unbroken urn or where it went after leaving Ireland. A farmer’s plough broke the flag-lined grave between 1900 and 1905, exposing three vessels: two shattered, one holding ashes. The complete urn bore widely spaced cordons and intersecting oblique lines, but it disappeared into America while its broken companions vanished elsewhere.
In pasture c. 100m ESE of standing stone (CO019-00101-). Discovered by farmer when ploughing between 1900 and 1905 (Doody 1986, Cork No. 11; Waddell 1990, 60). 'Three cinerary urns were found...enclosed in what appeared to be a grave, it had flags at the top, bottom and sides; two of the urns were in fragments and the third unbroken contained ashes.' (Kavanagh 1976, 358). Unbroken urn taken to America; described by Kavanagh from photograph (ibid., 359) as carrying 'three widely spaced cordons, with incised decoration in oblique lines occasionally intersecting, arranged from the rim to base. The rim is apparrently flat'. Present whereabouts of all three urns unknown. Waddell (ibid.) wonders whether this is same burial as alleged cist in nearby Aghacross (CO019-114---). No visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
