Oldcastletown hides its castle beneath a ruined country house, denying the footprint sought by modern eyes. The Fitzgibbon White Knights built one hall, three chambers and three cellars inside stone walls by 1583, creating a compact stronghold rather than a grand display. Lord Broghill captured the place in 1650, breaking that knightly line and passing it to the Fennel family. The original walls may still lie under later floors, waiting for someone to stop looking at the surface and start listening for the shape beneath.
No visible surface trace of castle; later country house, now in ruins, occupies the site. Castle of the Fitzgibbon family, commonly known as the White Knights (Healy 1988, 428-30). Described in 1583 as having 'one hall and three chambers and three cellars enclosed within stone walls' (ibid., 429). Captured by Lord Broghill in 1650, subsequently passed to Fennel family (ibid., 430).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
