Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Barronstown

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Barronstown holds a massive oval earthwork, forty-six metres long and enclosed by a seven-metre-wide bank that still rises nearly three metres high. People called it a fairy fort, yet its scale suggests human hands built a defensible home or marker rather than a trick for children. The eastern depression may have been an entrance, allowing entry into a space large enough for herds, tools and generations of ordinary life.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Oval area (int. dims. 46m N-S, 34.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (Wth 7m, H 1.1m internally, 2.8m externally) with possible entrance visible as a depression (Wth 3m) in the bank at E. Field enclosing site known as 'Cave Field' (CLAJ 1930, 178). (See also LH006-005002-).
