Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Banefune

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible entrance, no intact wall, no honest shape. A buried chamber sits beneath the centre while a real ringfort watches from fifteen metres south. The land has eaten the boundary between the two, leaving only a scarp, a dropped edge and a hole where meaning used to be.
In pasture, atop knoll. Circular area (24.8m NW-SE) defined by scarp (H 0.95m). Sharp fall of ground immediately outside scarp on E side and c. 4-6m beyond site N->NE. Low worn earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.4m) SSE->SSW separated from scarp by fosse. Small quarry cuts into interior to SE; natural slope quarried into to N. Interior level; possible Man-made underground passage (CO025-01403-) at centre. Line of stones atop scarp to ESE. Ringfort (CO025-01402-) lies c. 15m to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
