What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts at all. They are abandoned human ringforts, misnamed because people stopped believing the warning written in their shape. Ballywinna is one of them: an earthen circle in Galway pasture, now erased under grass and forgetting. The field keeps its own counsel. What it will not answer, it buries.

In gently rolling pastureland. Classified by McCaffrey (1952, 149, no. 58a) as a circular ‘Earthen fort’ (diam. 18.5m), only half of which was evident and was densely overgrown. No visible surface trace survives. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 15 February 2019
