Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyvorheen (owneybeg By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mature trees now strangle the scarped edge of a twenty-seven-metre circle on a gentle NE-facing slope in Ballyvorheen. The earth still holds a shallow external fosse to the southeast, marking a boundary drawn before human memory. Fairy fort is the local name, but the shape is a ringfort: a place where visibility and defense became one gesture.
Situated on a gentle NE-facing slope in undulating pasture with good views in all directions. The monument is partially obscured by scrup overgrowth but is evident as a sub-circular area (diam. 27m) defined by a scarped edge (Wth 3.7m; H 0.9m) with an external fosse (Wth 2.25m; D 0.4m) to SE. mature trees grow along the enclosing element.
