Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyroe (imokilly By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not magical. They are ordinary human places misread because shadow and distance hide their function. A fort may have been a fortress, a trap, a camp or a boundary marker. A ring may have been a road, a fence line or a military checkpoint. A chamber may have been a kitchen, a workshop or a waiting room. The fairy label appears when the human purpose leaves no witness behind.
On S-facing slope. Shown as arc of hachures on 1842 OS 6-inch map. According to Power (1940, 24) 'On Smith's farm were two lioses, but both have been destroyed'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
