Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballyphilip, County Limerick, is a circular earthwork with a 17-metre diameter and a thick bank standing 1.3 metres high outside. The interior was deliberately raised at the north to stay level on the sloping ground, while cattle still break the narrow margin between the monument and the field boundary. The name suggests people once believed the fairies lived there, but the shape and size suit a human dwelling or stronghold more closely.
In pasture, on a gentle N-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 17m) enclosed by earthen bank (Wth 9.3m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 1.3m). Interior is level and has been raised (H 1.3m) at N to compensate for hill-slope. Earthen field boundary runs E-W c. 1.5m to N of monument; margin of ground between monument and boundary is heavily poached by cattle. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 21 November 2013
