Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynidon

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often the ghosts of forgotten ringforts, and Ballynidon is no exception. The ridge held a circular enclosure wide enough for a small hall, yet time and soil have erased it. What remains is a vacancy the land remembers, inviting imagination to fill the shape once drawn in earth.
On N side of ridge. Shown as circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. No visible surface trace. Possible ringfort (CO124-022---) c. 220m to E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
