Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynamona (kinsale By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are misread human architecture, often cleared for cultivation or built upon without witness. Ballynamona is no longer visible because it became farmland, road material or foundation for another life. The cavity is not fantasy, it is measurement: a place removed from human memory and therefore available for imagination.
In tillage. Hachured on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular platform (diam. c. 40m); as C-shaped arc WSW->ESE on later eds OS 6-inch map. Levelled; curving field fence to E may retain original bank (int. H 1.5m; ext. H 1.3m). Stone spread in field. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
