Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynahaha

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are often invented to protect the site from human interference. In Ballynahaha, a real earthen ringfort appeared on maps before disappearing entirely. People may have called it fairy-owned because that explanation stopped others from digging, building or forgetting it. The field kept its shape in memory even after the land removed the wall.
In pasture, on steep N-facing hill-slope. Monument, depicted as roughly circular enclosure (c. 25m N-S; c. 35m E-W) on 1924 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
