Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballynacarriga (imokilly By., Killeagh Par.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are usually small earthen rings where people once lived or kept animals, but this one in Ballynacarriga has been levelled until it vanished from the slope. It still belongs beside the larger ringfort, suggesting the hill once carried more life than it shows now.
In pasture, on NW-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m). Levelled; no visible surface trace. Ringfort (CO066-020---) c. 40m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
