Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballymorisheen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not forts at all. They are circular enclosures, ring-shaped, often with a ditch or bank, sometimes broken by one entrance gap. They appear across Ireland in fields, hillsides, woodland edges and coastal plains. The name fairy fort is a later folk name. It does not mean that fairies built them, nor does it remove them from human history. The better working name is ringfort, rath or cashel, depending on region and tradition.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m). In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
