Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballymoney North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballymoney North is a subcircular earthen ringfort on a grassland rise in County Galway, measuring about thirty-nine metres east-west and thirty-four and a half metres north-south. Its stone-faced inner bank, surrounding ditch and partial outer bank still mark the shape of a place people once entered through a gap on the east side. The name suggests later belief rather than proven function, yet the surviving form points to deliberate building, defensible space and repeated use across generations.
On a rise in grassland. Subcircular rath (E-W 39m, N-S 34.5m), in fair condition, defined by a stone-faced inner bank, intervening fosse and outer bank; the latter is present from WNW to N. There is an entrance gap at E. (Neary 1914, 123, no. 137) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
