Magic and imagination have always flowed through Ballymakellett. That is why the quiet fort stands out, not as a forgotten ruin but as a living marker of the area's character. It reminds people that the land holds layers of story, memory and meaning.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area (int. diam. 24m) enclosed by earthen bank (Wth 3.7m, H 0.4m internally, 1.7m externally) with traces of stone facing. Entrance gap (Wth 2m) at ESE. Foundations of rectangular hut (LH005-024002-) (max. dims. 4.7m NW-SE, 3.1m NE-SW) with entrance gap at SE (Wth 1.25m) faced with large slabs, situated in centre of site.
