Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballymahon

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are a story, not a fact. They are a name for old ring ditches that vanished or never appeared. A fort is a fact. It has a measurable diameter, a visible bank or ditch, and a mapped position. Ballymahon contains a marked fort and several candidate fairy forts. The chamber contains a visible chamber, a removable lid, and a working camera.
In level, moderately drained pasture. Depicted as a circular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. The monument has been levelled and is not visible at ground level. The field is now used as a sports ground. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 23 November 2011
