Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyleck

Situated on a local rise of a low-lying S-N spur between S-N streams to the W and E that meet c. 250m to the N. A circular embanked and overgrown enclosure (ext. diam. c. 25m) is depicted on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic script as a ‘fort’. There is no visible evidence of an earthwork in pasture but the top of the rise is flat (diam. 21m N-S; 20m E-W). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
