Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygrania

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballygrania is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Ballygrania, County Sligo, Ireland. It occupies the top of a hillock in undulating pasture and preserves a circular raised area twenty-two metres across. Traces of an earth and stone bank still define the perimeter, measuring two point three metres wide and rising one point five metres externally. The visible remains confirm that the site is a ringfort, though local tradition also names it a fairy fort.
In undulating pasture, on the top of a hillock. A circular raised area (int. diam. 22m) defined by traces of an earth and stone bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.5m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
