What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballygilchrist is an earthen ringfort on a north-facing pasture slope, its oval measuring forty-seven by forty metres. A low bank of earth and stone circles most of the top, while a steeper scarp cuts the remaining edge. A shallow ditch and faint outer ridge still mark the boundary, though the entrance has vanished under grass and time. The shape suggests a home, a shelter or a boundary marker for people who no longer leave named records behind.

On a N-facing slope in pasture. A raised oval area (47m N-S; 40m E-W) enclosed from SE-W-N by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 5.5-7m; H 0.2-0.6m) and elsewhere defined by a scarp (H 1-2.1m). A shallow external fosse (Wth 6.5-8.5m; D 0.4m) is visible from S-W-N; although infilled from NNE-E-SE, its outline may still be traced. A low outer bank (Wth 4.5-5.6m; H 0.4-0.7m) survives from W-NW-N. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 23 November 2011
