Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinulty Lower

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human homes, farms and refuges built by living people. In Ballinulty Lower, a circular rath stood on a NE-facing shelf with two low banks and external fosses. People lived there, tended land and left a shape the earth still remembers. Forgetting that is the real fantasy.
On a shelf of level ground on a NE-facing slope. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded a raised circular area (diam. c. 26m) enclosed by two low banks of earth and stone with external fosses. The original entrance was probably at SSE. The rath has since been levelled but its outline is clearly visible on aerial photographs (see attachment). Compiled by: Patrick F.
