Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballintrane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Ballintrane are not magic but human remains, often buried or broken by ploughs and roads. They belong to the living memory of the area, not to fantasy.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 On slight rise in low-lying area. Regular circular platform (diam. 44m, H 0.6m) with very low narrow bank, possibly modern, on periphery (inside H 0.2m). Traces of fosse visible from NW-N-NNE. No visible surface traces of entrance. Second enclosure (CW013-044----) immediately S of ringfort.
A fairy fort, or earthen ringfort, in Ballintrane is a circular earthen enclosure typical of early-medieval Ireland, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. Local tradition associates such sites with the supernatural, often referring to them as dwellings of the fairies or ancient Irish deities.
