Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinruane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortals build rings to keep out what they fear. The fairies build rings to keep out mortals. The distinction matters less than the result: a circular place where human reason becomes optional. That is all a fairy fort is. Everything else is decoration.
In copse of mature evergreen trees. Circular area (diam. c. 30m) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 1.1m) with external fosse (D 0.4m; Wth 2m). Exterior face of bank revetted with stone WSW->WNW; probably faced in conjunction with construction of dry-stone field boundary which abuts bank at W. Ruins of a 'Constabulary Barracks' lie immediately outside enclosing element to SW. Interior level and densely overgrown by briars and nettles.
