Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Balliniska

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort, a 38m diameter ringfort in County Limerick, was depicted as an embanked circular enclosure on the 1924 OS 6-inch map. Ploughing and pasture work have since levelled most of the bank, leaving only a faint scarped edge and a concentric field boundary to mark its shape. The earth still holds the memory of a defended home, even if the timber and stone are gone.
In level pasture. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure on 1924 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled and incorporated into pasture field. However, it is still evident as circular area (diam. 38m) defined by scarped edge (H 0.25m; Wth 1.6m). A field boundary runs just outside and concentric with scarp S->N. Interior level and under pasture. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
