Fairy forts are not fortifications for human residence but ceremonial or ritual sites associated with the Sidhe. The earthen ring in Balling is a small, circular rath, now barely visible beneath grass and field boundaries, yet its shape remains distinct enough to identify. Two ringforts exist close together in this landscape, one perhaps for people and one for the old residents who never left.

In undulating grassland. Very poorly preserved circular rath (D 28m) defined by a bank from NW to E; elsewhere a degraded scarp, overlain by a field boundary from SE to SW, forms the enclosing element.
