Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinbrittig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for people; they are for the old owners of the soil. This is a ring of excluded ground, not a home. The break in the bank is not an invitation, and the excluded circle is not empty.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Circular area (31m E-W; 29m N-S) enclosed by earth and stone bank (H 1.3m), with external fosse (D 0.3m) surviving to N. Interior raised on SW side to compensate for hillslope. Break in bank to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
