Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Baile An Oidhre

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No stone or soil marks the fort now, though a circular enclosure still appears on old maps near the Glennahoo river. The land has swallowed the boundary, erasing the place people once drew around themselves. What was built has returned to the field, leaving only memory and a name behind.
On the 1st edition of the OS map a circular enclosure is marked here, on a fairly level tract of land less than 100m from the Glennahoo river. It was named 'Fort' on the Fair Plan. No visible trace survives. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 603. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
