Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ards (magunihy By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Magic fades when recorded. The fort in Ards may have been a human home, a boundary marker or a forgotten shrine. It is not a fairy fort, although people may have called it one before recordkeeping reached the area. What is known is that a circular enclosure once stood on an open ridge, large enough to be seen from a distance and important enough to draw a line around.
In pasture, on an elevation with commanding views in all directions. This possible rath is not visible at ground level though there is a slight dip towards the centre of the elevation. It is indicated as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on the 1846 OS 6-inch map. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
