Castle

Lewis records that Beaufort House, which is located on the W bank of the River Laune, was built on the site of a structure known as Short Castle (1837, 237). No remains of an earlier building are now apparent in the fabric of this eighteenth-century house, though Bary notes that it is built over a partial basement which is reputed to be the foundations of the castle (1994, 46). The site may be that referred to by Smith in this general location as 'a small ruined castle, erected in the wars of 1641, by one Captain Sullivan, as a place of defence' (1756, 145).
