Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ardnageehy West

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Muddy feet, lost socks and hidden chambers belong in fairy forts, not human history. Ardnageehy West contained an earthen ringfort, a sub-circular enclosure about thirty-five metres wide that people built, used and forgot before carts, cameras or maps. It is levelled now, erased from the slope like a cancelled sentence. The land keeps its shape only in memory, denying the fancy tale and refusing to explain itself.
In pasture, on NNE-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as sub-circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m E-W; 40m N-S). Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
