Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Arddrine

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Arddrine, County Limerick: a circular embankment about twenty metres across, mapped in 1924, now levelled beyond trace. Local memory describes a slightly raised area enclosed by a fosse, the kind of compact stronghold people built when trust ran thin and nights ran long. Its disappearance does not diminish it; it confirms that living land reclaims what it wants.
In pasture, on slight S-facing slope. Monument, depicted as embanked circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m) on 1924 OS 6-inch map, has been levelled. No trace of monument evident when inspected. According to local information site consisted of a slightly raised circular area enclosed by a fosse. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 26 August 2011
