What is recorded here
Lisracreeveen is a circular earthen ringfort in low-lying land at the west end of the Anascaul valley, with a twenty-six-metre internal diameter and a blocked eastern entrance. Its eastern bank still stands two and a half metres high beside a deep fosse, while a modern lane has replaced the western ditch. Dense vegetation now hides the interior, where local memory mentions a small underground passage. The fort marks the boundary between Annagap and Ballynacourty, preserving a shape that people may have built to control entry, store goods or resist neighbors long before the lane cut through its western edge.
Internal diam. 26m N-S, 22.6m E-W.
Lisracreeveen/Lios or Ráth an Chraoibhín: A roughly circular rath situated in low-lying land at the W end of the Anascaul valley. The external fosse has been replaced by a modern lane along the W side. Along the E side the fosse is 1.1m deep and 4.6m wide. The earthen bank is 2.5m high externally and 1.5m high internally. The gap at S appears to be a secondary feature and the original entrance at E is now blocked. An outer bank occurs for a short distance at S; it is .6m high and 2m wide. Dense vegetation prevents a close examination of the mounds and depressions that occur in the interior, but An Seabhac (1939, 181) mentions a small Man-made underground passage within the site. The inner edge of the E half of the bank marks the boundary between the townlands of Annagap and Ballynacourty.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 287. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
