Half road, half ruin, the fort still holds its shape in Aghatawny Upper. The eastern bank rises two metres above the grass while the western ditch has flattened into a shallow smile. Mixed woodland crowds the eastern edge and pasture stretches west, giving the place two different temperatures under one sky. People may have lived inside that circle before the road cut through it, but no artifact has emerged to confirm the claim. The land keeps its secret steady, undisturbed by the carriage passing above.

Situated in a col between drumlins to the E, W and S with slightly lower ground immediately to the N and S. It is described as a 'fort' bisected by a N-S road on the 1835 and 1944 editions of the OS 6-inch map. It is a circular area (diam. 35.4m E-W; c. 33m N-S) bisected by a N-S roadway and defined by an earthen bank (at E: Wth 5.5m; int. H 1.6m; ext. H 2.2m) and external fosse (Wth at base 2.5m; D. 1m) to the E of the road, and by a slight fosse (Wth of top c. 6m; int. D 0.2-0.4m; ext. D 0.1-0.2m) to the W. It is planted with mixed woodland to the E of the road and is in pasture to the W. Archaeological testing (04E1061) outside the perimeter at NE in Cannaboe townland produced no related material (Henry 2007).
