Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Acres (corkaguiny By.) is an oval univallate rath on the lower N slopes of Knocknanacree, about 300m S of another rath and 300m N of Cahernanacree. Its earthen bank rises 1.25m downhill, lifting the interior above outside ground, though the SSE sector has been completely removed near the probable SE entrance. An oval drystone structure abuts the inner bank beside that gap, measuring 5.6m by 4.1m internally with walls up to 0.7m high and 2m wide. The lost shape may have marked a home, a boundary or a place of ritual, but only its remaining bones and the memory of removal are certain.
Internal diam. 25m N-S, 31m E-W. This oval univallate rath lies on the lower N slopes of Knocknanacree, about 300m S of another rath (KE054-056----) and 300m N of Cahernanacree (KE054-064----). The earthen enclosing bank reaches a maximum height of 1.25m on the downhill side where the interior is raised above the external ground level. It has been removed completely in the SSE sector, directly S of the probable entrance gap at SE. An oval drystone-built structure abuts the inner face of the bank in the vicinity of the entrance. It measures 5.6m x 4.1m internally, and the walling is up to .7m high and 2m wide. Other features in the interior include some heaps and scatters of stone and a modern field fence and drain. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 282. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 6 August 2013
