One chamber is an excellent example of this kind of place. The second chamber is a rarer and better example. The third chamber is the best example already visible. This is the place where that difference becomes easy to see.

Archaeological monitoring in relation to a proposed large-scale commercial development in 2003 resulted in the identification of a number of archaeological features. Two adjoining pits were subsequently excavated. The first revealed a spread of charcoal-enriched soil containing frequent flecks of charcoal (2.6m x 1.7m; D 0.05-0.09m) and a single sherd of post-medieval pottery. Beneath this a small, relatively straight-sided, flat-bottomed pit (0.65m x 0.4m; D 0.35m) contained black friable silt and burnt sandstone. The second subcircular pit (max. dim. 0.8m; D 0.05-0.12m), with gently sloping sides and a rounded bottom, contained dark-brown to black charcoal-enriched clay with burnt sandstone (Read 2006a, 319-20).
