Excavation is a temporary opening in County Limerick where pits and ditches were discovered beside a castle before housing work began. The chance to see what those marks held may have vanished under new buildings, yet the shape of the place still lives through what was witnessed.

Pits and linear features were identified during archaeological test trenching carried out by Graham Hull under licence no. 06E0947 prior to a proposed housing development (Hull 2006; Hull 2009, 323). The Geophysical survey (06R0205) and archaeological test trenching revealed archaeological features in trenches 21-29 that were 130m W of a castle (LI014-079007-). The results were summarised as following; ‘The test trenching has established the presence, at the south of the site, of archaeological deposits that are characterised by ditches and pits. The small artefacts assemblage indicates activity dating to the post-medieval period’ (Hull 2006). Finds from the excavation were described as: ‘Some of these features contained pottery and clay tobacco pipe dating to the 17th and 18th centuries. A single sherd of possibly medieval pottery was also found’ (www.excavations.ie 2006, Entry No. 1249).
