What is recorded here
Excavation at Carrigaline Middle in 2001 revealed two small pits and a stony patch beside an old rath, probably marking domestic activity or boundary work long before housing arrived. The irregular larger pit and rounded smaller pit cut through soft grey silt, suggesting repeated use rather than a single dramatic event. They may have held refuse, tools or ritual leftovers, while the stones marked a path, barrier or place of remembrance. The excavation did not build a palace; it recovered the ordinary shape of human attention in County Cork.
Archaeological testing was carried out in advance of a large multi-phase housing development at Carrigaline Middle in 2001. Two pits were uncovered immediately W of a rath (CO087-030----). The first of these pits (1.1m N-S; 2.4m E-W) was irregularly shaped while the second (0.5m N-S; 0.3m E-W) was subcircular in plan. Both pits consisted of a soft grey silty material. A stony area (1m N-S; 0.55m E-W) lay immediately to the W. (Sherlock 2002)
