What is recorded here
Enclosure in Tennalough stands on a high hill in County Longford, its two nested banks still holding the shape of a place nobody has fully explained. The outer ring measures eighty-five metres, the inner sits at its centre, and thin banks stretch between them like spokes on a forgotten wheel. A house site presses against the southern edge, suggesting someone lived where the view runs out to sky. The entrance has vanished, but the chambers remain, waiting for the story they swallowed.
On a high prominent hill in rolling pasture with extensive views in all directions. A raised subrectangular area (c. 85m NW–SE; c. 77m NE–SW) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone (Wth 2.5m; H 0.2-0.7m) with a shallow external fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.2m). The original entrance is not recognisable. Built against the inner face of the bank at SSW is a house site (LF023-020003-). At the centre of the interior is another enclosure (LF023-020002-). Low, linear banks of earth and stone extend from the latter, at NW, NE and SSE, to the bank of the larger enclosure. The relationship between the two enclosures is unknown. A quarry road had been constructed ‘near to and partially impinging’ upon this monument prior to monitoring of topsoil stripping for a realigned quarry road in 2002. No archaeological features or artifacts were recovered (Russell 2004, 348-9).
