Enclosure in Sraleagh

On the summit of a ridge in undulating terrain, with land falling away to the E and W, in pasture. Good views in all directions. Identified by Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 85-6) as, 'a large, circular rath some ten or twelve perches away to the south' of the church (KK005-060001-) and graveyard (KK005-060002-) in Sraleath townland. This monument is not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch or 25-inch maps, however, its location was identified during fieldwork carried out by The Sites and Monuments Record Office in 1987. The outline of a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) is visible on OS Ortho imagery. It is visible at ground level as a subtle circular rise (diam. 35m N-S) with the suggestion of a fosse at the base of the rise where the ground is particularly waterlogged. The field is quite wet but the raised area is dry. The soil in the vicinity of the monument has some larger stones than elsewhere, possibly levelled bank material.
