On Roughan Hill at the eastern edge of the Burren, a subcircular enclosure measuring thirty-two by fifty-four metres still holds its shape inside an ancient field system. It belongs to the Beaker period and Early Bronze Age, conjoined with two neighbour enclosures to form one cluster of farms so close they share breath. People moved through this landscape when stone walls were new, tending life within boundaries that have outlasted every name spoken beside them.

Situated on Roughan Hill on the E edge of the Burren. Survey and excavation in this area (Jones et al. 2011, 33-58) have revealed a prehistoric landscape comprising farms, cairns and megalithic tombs lying within a contemporary field system (c. 2.5km N-S, c. 1.5km E-W) comprising many sections of prehistoric mound wall (CL016-172----). Four such farms are clustered on Roughan Hill within 200m of each other (see CL016-167003-, CL016-173----, CL017-173001-, CL016-174----, CL016-175----, CL016-176----). This record is for one of three conjoined enclosures making up ‘Farm RH5’. Enclosure CL016-174---- is conjoined at NE and CL016-165---- is at NW. This enclosure (dims. c. 32m N-S; c. 54m E-W) is subcircular in shape as are the other two. Limited excavation at RH5 revealed similar lithic artifacts to the other farms. This, along with the morphology of its walls and the fact that it is embedded in the same mound wall system imply that this is also of Beaker period and Early Bronze Age date (ibid. 39).
