Enclosure in Lissanisky (kinalea By.)

Enclosure

What is recorded here

No god is named, but two holy wells flank the causeway like sentinels. The oval pasture stands slightly raised above the surrounding ground, bounded by a shallow fosse and entered through a NE gap. People may have walked that causeway to drink, pray or mark a boundary, leaving no stone behind but shaping the land into a room for ceremony or memory.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Slightly raised oval area (66.1m N-S; 45.7m E-W) enclosed by fosse (D 1.1m). Causeway across fosse to NE. Interior level and raised slightly (c. 0.3m) above surrounding ground level. Holy wells (CO097-005--- and CO097-007---) to NE and NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
