Enclosure in Killure Castle

In flat grassland. Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1948) as a large circular bivallate enclosure (D c. 90m) skirted by a laneway from W to NW: a small roofed rectangular building is shown on its perimeter at WSW. The monument has been almost completely levelled as a result of field clearance. From W to N, a curving earthen field boundary may represent the last vestiges of the inner bank. Otherwise, the line of the enclosing element is indicated only by a slight rise in the field level. Tentative traces of an intervening fosse and outer bank survive from N to E and at SE, indicated by a wide shallow depression and a second low rise respectively. A low ride (E-W c. 28m) is visible within interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.
